Lucknow: Speculation over a major administrative reshuffle in the Uttar Pradesh Police has gathered pace, with senior IPS officer Tarun Gauba emerging as the frontrunner for the post of Lucknow Police Commissioner. While discussions within administrative circles have intensified, the Uttar Pradesh government has not yet issued any official notification confirming the appointment.
According to sources, Gauba, a 2001-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer currently serving as Additional Director General (ADG), Security, is among the leading candidates being considered to head the Lucknow Police Commissionerate. The anticipated reshuffle is expected to involve several senior IPS officers and key leadership positions across the state.
The speculation comes at a time when reports suggest that 1994-batch IPS officer Sujit Pandey may soon be relieved to join the National Police Academy (NPA). At the same time, there are indications that the current Lucknow Police Commissioner, Amrendra Singh Sengar, could be elevated to the post of Director General of Police (DGP) as part of the proposed administrative changes. However, these developments too remain unconfirmed until formal government orders are issued.
Tarun Gauba is regarded as an experienced police officer with an extensive service record in law and order management, security administration and policing. During his career, he has held several important assignments in the Uttar Pradesh Police and is currently responsible for overseeing security operations across the state in his capacity as ADG, Security. His experience in handling sensitive security matters and administrative responsibilities has placed him among the top contenders for one of the state’s most significant policing roles.
If appointed as Lucknow Police Commissioner, Gauba will assume responsibility for maintaining law and order in the state capital, preventing and investigating crime, managing traffic, overseeing VIP and VVIP security, coordinating emergency response, and ensuring public safety in one of India’s most politically and administratively important cities.
The Lucknow Police Commissionerate occupies a unique position in Uttar Pradesh’s policing framework. As the state capital, Lucknow is home to the Chief Minister’s Office, Raj Bhavan, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the State Secretariat, and several other key government institutions and diplomatic establishments. The city regularly hosts high-profile political events, official functions and visits by national and international dignitaries, making the role of Police Commissioner particularly crucial.
Sources indicate that the state government may soon issue transfer and posting orders involving senior IPS officers, with Tarun Gauba’s name prominently featuring in discussions for the Lucknow Police Commissioner post. Nevertheless, neither the Police Headquarters nor the Home Department has officially confirmed the proposed appointment.
Until an official notification is released, the reported appointment remains speculative. Administrative circles expect that if the proposed reshuffle receives the government’s approval, formal orders could be issued in the coming days. Until then, all discussions regarding Tarun Gauba’s appointment as Lucknow Police Commissioner should be treated as speculation rather than a final decision.
